FLIR Systems and Eclipse have a long-term partnership, with Eclipse providing IR optical design expertise during peaks in FLIR’s development activity. Working in the LWIR range (8–14 µm), the most common lens material is Germanium, which has a high index of refraction (~4) making it possible to design objectives with very few lens elements.
Technology: IR optical design for thermal cameras (LWIR, 8–14 µm)
Challenge: Minimize the number of Germanium lens elements while achieving high image quality — a core trade-off in IR optical design.
